How I Use Notion | Trying A New Productivity Tool

Notion has been all over Instagram and Tiktok lately and as a lover of productivity tools I had to try it out! I’ve spent the entire weekend looking up layout ideas on Pinterest, watching videos to  figure out the tool  and creating my own pages. It’s easy, but you can easily get lost in all the options and possibilities!

Read “The Truth About Notion | My Thoughts 3 Months Later” for my most recent Notion update.

What’s Notion?

Notion is an all-in-one workspace. Whether you want to take notes, keep track of your tasks, plan your next trip or create a mood board. Everything is possible. You can use premade templates or create your own layout like I did. There are a lot of options, which I love! I could easily customize the pages to a layout that actually works for me.

How do I use this tool?

I love the idea of an all-in-one productivity tool. I currently use multiple apps to track my to-do’s, my habits, plan my week and so on. One tool to replace all the others apps would be great. It’s easier to keep track of things, when they’re all in one place.

My Notion Set-Up - Dashboard - Personal & Blog - Productivity Tool

I’ve started by creating my dashboard. Here I’ve linked all the other pages I’ve created. Separated into two columns I organize my personal life and my blog. I’ve put my planner at the top, because I use that for both my personal life as well as my blog.

I started with a few pages and expanded from there. Notion can be quite overwhelming with all its different options, layouts and uses. It also takes a bit of experimenting to find what works best for you and what kind of pages you actually need.

How I plan with Notion

On my planner page I’ve listed my ideal routine, two pages for daily to-do’s organized by week and a monthly overview. I like to plan two weeks in advance, so I know which daily tasks I have to do both this week and next week.

How I track my habits

like to keep track of habits like drinking water, my workouts and skincare routines, so I created a simple habit tracker. I didn’t add too many habits, because it’s easier to keep track and actually do them if there are only just a few.

Something I really like about the tables in notion is that you can calculate a lot of different things. I, for example, calculate the average amount of water I drank that month and how many days I’ve worked out that month. This makes it so much easier to know how well you’re keeping up with your habits on a month to month basis.

How I organize my reading

My Reading Journal Layout - 2021 Log

I’ve wanted to start a reading journal for a while now, but I haven’t found the right bullet journal yet to actually start one. So I’m going to try to keep a digital one on Notion. I’ve started tracking some basic stats like the number of books and pages I’ve read per month and the reading challenges I’m participating in.

I like having a digital reading journal, because nothing is permanent. If I change my mind on something I can easily change it.

My blog pages are very basic at the moment. I added the things I actually need and use like a content calendar and ideas page. After a bit of experimenting, I’ll probably add some more pages, but currently this is enough.

I really like my current Notion set-up, I feel like it’s both functional and pretty to look at. There is still a lot of room for experimenting though. The uses are endless, so I think you’ll always find new ways to use Notion. I do have one tip! Keep it simple. Start of with a few basic pages you definitely need and add more along the way. Experiment with it and see what works for you. Think first about the functionality and then about how pretty you want it to be. That will make it a lot easier to actually create pages you’ll still be using after a month or two.
